Established on 26th April 2002, VDGMC is affiliated with the
Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS), Nashik. The first batch of
100 MBBS students was admitted in July 2003 via CET/NEET, with
85% state quota and 15% All-India PMT quota.
Initially, the college functioned from a 200-bed District Hospital, also incorporating
Kasturba Gandhi Women’s Hospital (60 beds) and the Eye Hospital (60 beds).
These were officially transferred to the Department of Medical Education on 1st October 2007.
An additional 13 acres of land from a decommissioned railway line expanded the campus to
53 acres. Modern college and hospital buildings were developed with upgraded operation
theatres and academic departments.
The first MBBS batch appeared for final exams in Nov/Dec 2007 and completed their internship
in February 2009, following which the Medical Council of India (MCI) granted
final approval.
The founding of VDGMC addressed the regional imbalance in medical education across Maharashtra.
A vision document by MUHS in 2001 showed major disparities in medical college distribution, with
Mumbai and Pune having 2–3x more capacity than regions like Vidarbha, Marathwada, and South Maharashtra.
The concern was brought to Governor Dr. P. C. Alexander and Chief Minister Hon. Vilasrao Deshmukh,
leading to the establishment of three government medical colleges in Kolhapur, Akola, and Latur.
VDGMC continues to honor the legacy of Hon. Vilasrao Deshmukh, whose vision made the institution
a cornerstone of healthcare and medical education in the Marathwada region.
